Flower Update

It's been awhile since I posted an update on my flowers. There was plenty of rain this spring and into June to take us out of our drought, but we've seen very little rain for the past six weeks or so.

Love the brown eyed Susans.

Been watering to keep everything looking good.

These are much more orange than the ones in the main garden.

Surprise lilies just popped up earlier this week.

The Weeds Have Taken Over

Yes, I will admit that my flowers have been neglected. Last summer I didn't accomplish much in any of my gardens because of a sore foot. And this year I spent lots of weekends helping get ready for the auction. So I was behind before I even got started. Most of it was just tall grass and not weeds.
Buried under all the grass is some phlox. But to really get all of the grass and weeds, I decided to just dig it all out.
So I got started on a nice cool Saturday morning. I only planned to spend a couple of hours out there, but the sun never really came out to make it hot and before I knew it, it was 5 hours later.
I started in the corner first since it was the worst, because if I ran out of energy, I wanted to at least have something to show for it.

It looks so much better. I replanted the tulips that had been dug up and plan to put some mums in later this Fall.

Then I started along the side of the deck. This is the before shot.
I got the first few feet finished and then called it quits for the day.

A few days ago there was another cool day for me to get outside and finish weeding this area. I found a few more tulips as I was digging so got those replanted too.
I also happened to run across some electrical along the concrete that runs from the house to the garage. So glad I was digging with the hand digger and not my big spade in that spot.

Now I'm debating about putting mulch down along the entire deck but will make the final decision next spring.

The Finished Glider

Mom finished painting the glider and got it all back together before I got home again to help out.

Love the color we picked out! Read Part 1 here.

A Glimpse of a Refinished Glider

While I was home over the weekend, Mom had a project she wanted help with. She had a glider that sat out in the yard for many, many years, and it was showing its age. It had several coats of varnish on it that was cracking and peeling.

A couple years ago she got a new one, but it just wasn't as comfortable as the old one. It almost got put on the curb once (maybe twice), but for some reason she kept hanging on to it.

We got our supplies ready and started sanding away. At first we were just going to sand the slats in their places, but we soon found out the many coats of varnish put on over the years needed more than that. And we wanted all the work we were going to have to put into it to last longer than one season.

So we took each one off...some easier than others.

Then they were sanded and a coat of primer put on.

There was quite a bit of yellowing coming thru the primer so Mom was able to coat them a second time today.

Before I left to come back home, we were able to get a coat of green on four of the slats just so we could see what the color would really look like.

Mom is going to work on it over the next few days and will probably have it finished before I get back to help again.

I can't wait to see the finished project.

Dahlhauser Machine Shop - Timeline

It all started in 1940 with Grandpa Henry pumping gas; doing all of his own repairs as needed. As more people learned of his repair expertise, his business led to a machine shop which has prospered for the past 73 years.

The shop was just a single small building at first with their family home built to the south of it. (#1 in photo below)

The initial building eventually became the steel room. Before the sale in the above photo.

The empty steel room above after the sale. The people in the background are standing in an addition.

The first addition was put on in about 1948. (#2 in the above aerial photo). At times this room holds the race car that Dad helps with...and that's about as wide as it is.

The second addition was put on in the early 1960s. (#3 in above aerial photo). It held two hay racks before the sale.

The same room almost empty and from the other end.

Grandpa and his brother, Paul, ran Dahlhauser Bros. until about 1962-1963 when they parted ways. Grandpa continued the machine shop business with the help of his sons.

An old West Bend Elevator office building was originally bought to be moved onto a foundation and made into a home for my Mom and Dad. But after closer inspection it was decided it wasn't in good enough condition for a home, so it was used as another addition to the shop around 1968 – 1970. It was used to store inventory and for much needed office space. (#4 in above aerial photo)

The final and largest addition was put on in 1975, and an open house was held to celebrate. At the time it seemed like such a large space and would fit the biggest of equipment, but just a handful of years later, it was getting full and customers' equipment was getting bigger. Starting to get ready for the sale on May 31 in the 1975 addition.

Getting ready for the sale on June 14.

West Bend's Quasquicentennial was in 1981, and Dahlhauser Machine Shop had an entry in the parade.  Mike, Grandpa, and Dad were on the float with the old coal forge.

Dad doesn't remember when, but when he was doing some remodeling, he found an old flag in one of the walls. It only had 48 stars. He donated it to the American Legion.

Grandpa Henry and his four sons worked there for several years. When he retired in 1978, Dad bought and operated the business until May 31, 2013. Charlie worked with him until 1985, Tim until 1992, and Gene until June 2001.

The Shop will be missed by many in West Bend and surrounding towns. It holds many memories for me and my family. The end of an era.

Dad's Retirement

Last February, Dad called to say that he had decided to sell the shop. He had already cut back on the hours he was working over the past few years, but it was time to officially retire. Grandpa Henry started the shop in 1940, and Dad grew up and worked there his entire life.

The beginning. The picture didn't have a date on it, but I'm guessing it's about 1942-43.

Working hard on his official last day.

Many hours have been spent in the past few months going thru the stuff that accumulates in a building after 73 years.

The shop is a part of family history and holds many memories.
Happy Retirement, Dad!

Spring....and then Winter's last hurrah

It's been while since I posted so here are some pictures of some of my spring flowers and then the late, quick blast of winter we had.

We ended up with about 6 inches of wet, heavy snow on May 2-3.

Everything survived the snow. The tulips just closed up during the cold weather and then opened up again and lasted for a bit longer than they would have.
